iNet 6 The Star & Playa 20'th Anniversary/Dru Hill

iNet 6 The Star celebrates it's 20 year Anniversary and we also celebrate the 20 Year Anniversary of Playa's Cheers 2 U album...

Static Major Interview:

TB: Who influenced you musically?

Static: I have many different influences..so i'm gonna go against the grain. My influences are Project Pat, Lil Wayne..guys like that i listen to. I listen to street music, the streets influence me.

TB: What was the feeling like when you first tasted success?

Static: Man umm.. When i first tasted success it was after me being in the game for about 6 or 7 years. At that point it started feeling like a job.

TB: That was with DeVante Swing..right?

Static: Yeah it was with my first success of Ginuwine's "Pony". That was actually my first hit song, and that was when i left DeVante.

TB: What was the name of your group before you came up with the name Playa?

Static: It was still the same guys, but locally the name was Touch Of Class.

TB: What was it like in Da Bassment with Missy Elliott, Timbaland & Magoo, Ginuwine etc.?

Static: It was like music school( i laugh and tell Static..Stevie J said the same thing). We all lived in the same apartment building. The studio was like walking distance from the apartments. We was over at the studio everyday.

TB: That was in Andrews Building in Rochester, NY?

Static: Right

TB: What label are you on now?

Static: I'm on Blackground/Universal

TB: How did you get on the Pretty Ricky album?

Static: Actually, i do a lot of work with Atlantic Records, and they felt i was perfect for that group. Atlantic sent me to Miami and magic happened. I stayed down there for a month and a half and we did most of the album.

TB: You wrote a lot of songs that didn't make albums?

Static: Yeah, those songs were for Pussycat Dolls, Brandy,Kanye West, Beyonce, Rudy etc..

TB: Who are you working with now?

Static: I just got out of the studio with Trey Songz. I'm working with Bobby V, Jamie Foxx etc. I'm still workin on my album of course and JoJo too..

TB: Tell me about your album..

Static: Ahh maan , my album has been a long time coming. I took me years to really sell myself on being a solo artist..cuz i always saw myself in a group with Playa. I gotta lot of different styles..So i had to figure out which style would be the basis for my album. Now i'm right on track on where i wanna be. I always said i wanted to go after R.Kelly cuz that's the only person i could compare myself to. This album is going to be vintage R&B but with a street twist to it. All i listen to is street music (Seagram,Big Mike, UGK,Lil Flip etc), so the songs i do will have something the streets can grasp on to..

TB: What was it like working with Aaliyah?

Static: Oooh maaaan, it was like amazing bruh. Her work ethic was like no other still to this day. As much of a diva as she was, she would stay in the studio until five in the morning if need be, Aaliyah would re-do the part if it needed to be re-done. It was no hassle working with Babygurl. She specialized in taking what i did and putting her Aaliyah to it. Babygurl is sorely missed around here but we still feel her..

( We end the interview with a fabulous tribute to Aaliyah. Not long after this interview..Static passed. This is probably the last interview he ever did before passing). RIP Aaliyah & Static 😢

Keeping it R&B, here's an interview with a new artist who is breaking ground, he goes by the name J.Esq. He has opened up for Lil Mo and he's a huge Jodeci/ Da Bassment fan...

TB: Who are your inspirations when you create music?

J.Esq: Life, experience and energy inspire the songs i make. There are times i go into the studio as an empty canvas not knowing what will come out.

TB: Where are you from?

J.Esq: Baltimore, MD..Born and raised. Westside to be exact.

TB: Do you believe R&B music is timeless & Why?

J.Esq: Absolutely! You wont hear those type of storylines, melodies and songwriting in any other genre except maybe country which is derived from R&B.

TB: Why are so many artists lacking in their hustle to sell music..when they could sell it out their phone like they would out of the trunk of their car?

J.Esq: Well i think people are hoping to be backed and pushed by a company like in the old days.. It's also a lack of funds, drive and confidence sometimes.

TB: Tell me what your process is like when you record a song..

J.Esq: I don't write anything down. I listen to the track and let the words abd melody find me. Then i build witty backgrounds and harmonies. More than likely after i'm done..i do them over again. I'm a perfectionist to the core

TB: Your style is reminiscent of Dave Hollister, did you study his body of work?

J.Esq: I'm a huge respecter of Dave and his work as a solo artist and with Blackstreet and i think it's a huge compliment to be compared to him. I was never really an understudy of his, i'm more of a fan of his work.

TB: What is the name of your new album?

J.Esq: The album is called "Imperfect Gentleman"

TB: From a business perspective..what are your future plans once you get a good financial base?

J.Esq: To continue to grow as an artist and a business man. To give to my community, give to others around the globe and make great music for people all over the world to love.

Anthony Lewis: Not right now but i would love to work with DeVante again.

TB: Are you going to work with Missy Elliott?

Nottz: Hell yeaah. I would love to work with Missy...VA sh*t all day killa

TB: When did you first hear Jodeci and what clicked with you? (J.Esq bonus interview question).

J.Esq: The first time i connected with Jodeci was in 1991. It was the summer and i had just moved in with my father. In second grade i was in a new school and my dad gave a little boombox . It was raining and i was sitting in my room when all of a sudden this song starts playing, it was called " Forever My Lady". The way they sang that song and the smooth production got my undivided attention.

TB: You were on D-Day Records?

Rae ( Valley Boys): Yup.. I came after Da Bassment..DeVante taught me a lot.

TB: Did you put out any albums?

Rae (Valley Boys): Naw..but we had that fire with the Valley Boys.

TB: Did you work with DeVante Swing.

Samson Logan: I did

TB: Were you on DeVante's Private Collection? If so which tracks did you do..

Samson Logan: Mostly on all of it..

TB: Have you ever worked with Bazaar Royale

Marco Polo: I have not

TB: Would you ever work with him?

Marco Polo: I'd have to hear his stuff first.

TB: Was Pharrell around when you were in Da Bassment?

Magoo: No, at that time he was working with Chad and Teddy Riley. N.E.R.D. is a phenomenal group of innovators. They were building with the great Teddy Riley. Pharrell had a huge influence on me. He showed me not to be afraid of who i am..He was always FREE..
