Compton: Boyz N Da Hood

MC EIHT INTERVIEW:

TB: When was the first time you picked up a mic and started spitting?

MC EIHT: Probably when i was about 16, just fuckin around in my homeboy's garage, We had some turntables and a microphone, and we started spittin. That when i got my real first taste of the mic.

TB: Growing up in Compton, who inspired you in Hip Hop?

MC EIHT: When i first started, i use to listen to Toddy Tee , Mixmaster Spade..dudes like that. Then i heard RUN DMC, and EPMD. Some early street shit.

TB: Describe the feeling when you first heard your son played on the radio?

MC EIHT: It was the best feeling being from the hood. Our first single was about the block. People felt it and accepted it.

TB: The first station that broke the single?

MC EIHT : That was on KDAY (We both shout out Julio G for that)

TB: Explain the affiliation with N.W.A.

MC EIHT: We was all cool with them. Really it was Chill who was hangin with MC REN. That's how we became affiliated.

TB: During the 80's, why did Compton stand out the most in Los Angles rather than say, Watts or Inglewood?

MC EIHT: Shiiit. It was different back then tryna live life in the hood. Living that life was difficult also, without getting caught up in the madness of the street.

TB: Tell me the inspiration behind all your albums?

MC EIHT: I got more musically inclined hearing records. With that experience, we got to experiment more with the music and samples. Our neighborhood was also an inspiration because we saw wild shit in Compton. We made raw and gritty records. Flexin my MC skills and gaining maturity.

TB: I noticed John Singleton got inspiration for his film from your music?

MC EIHT: Definitely.. He was diggin the first album It's A Compton Thang. With that, he really really liked us. I used to be on set with Jay D of Da Lench Mob and John was like "I like your sound. Why don't i get you on the soundtrack (Menace II Society)" I didn't think it was going to happen, but he called me the next day and it was crackin.

TB: Being the lead roll in Menace II Society, how was the acting experience in your first major film?

MC EIHT: It was a hell of an experience. Me doing nothing like that, they wanted me to get in the movie cuz they respected my craft. I was thrilled to get that action.

TB: You're a hell of an actor by the way. The role you did was straight raw.

MC EIHT: Thank you very much, i appreciate that. I tried to play the roll to the fullest with street realism. Everybody, go get the movie and see ho history was made.

TB: You were in Thicker Than Water with Fat Joe too..

MC EIHT: I got a little part in that movie. Keeping up with the acting thing, sharpening my skills.

TB: The album We Come Strapped went gold. How did that make you feel?

MC EIHT: That album came out right after my movie thang with Menace II Society. The anticipation for that album was really high. Doing that record, i put my all into it. Me and Slip produced most of it. Then bingo, a hit record. That album i got do on my own . No labels were involved in the making of that record. No detours, it was straight raw .

TB: How did you get on GTA: San Andreas as Ryder?

MC EIHT: They wanted to use one of our songs from CMW's "The Hood Done Took Me Under". We was talking back and forth. They was hollerin about this character they had and wanted to know if i would do the voice overs. I checked it out and i was like "yeah. no problem". I'm always down to do something different, especially under the same lines of what i've done anyways. The character was about hood things. They gave me the script..it felt natural . Plus the let me change a few things to my liking. It was history after that.

TB: Any other project you're working on?

MC EIHT: Yeah , i got my album, CMW's new album, and a few collab albums. Tryna stay busy. Keep things poppin, ya feel me..

TB: Since your beef with DJ Quik is squashed. Would you do a collab album with him.

MC EIHT: Fa Sho.. We grew as men men, so all that beef shit is past history. I know tons of folk who would wanna see us make that album happen. I'm down for whatever.

Screwston: Woodgrain & Candy Paint

KB DA KIDNAPPA Interview (throwback from 2006)

TB: Tell me about the history of Street Military?

KB: Street Military started back in the 90's. I was the baby of the group and the last member. How we got started was at a talent show on the northside of Houston at a club called Charlemagne. The club was holding a talent show. Myself, Flea, Icy and Pharaoh went in and entered the contest. We won a couple of times. After the contest ,we bumped into a couple of other winners who won before us, and they invited us out to the recording studio. They were working for Gerrord Records, a label we eventually signed to. The bonding with all of us in the studio, we created a group and named it Street Military.

TB: Z-RO was around ya'll at that time?

KB: Yeah, Z-RO was around. He was around in the sense of being in the background listening and being raised (learning the process). Street Military put out their first record in 1991. The first single was called "Episode" and the B-Side had "That's The Type I Am".

TB: Did it do good in the streets?

KB: Yeaaah.. it did awesome in the streets. As soon as that record came out, big funds started rolling in. That's what got us big recognition, the streets was recognizing us as being real. It had messages that they could relate to. People in Mississippi  , Louisiana, Florida didn't knew who we were, but the could relate to it. Our lyrics were about struggle , hitting the block to get ends to feed our kids ect.. Stuff the hood could relate to.

TB: What part of the northside of Houston are you from?

KB: I'm from Trinity Gardens

TB: So you all knew the Trinity Garden Cartel?

KB: Yeah, we grew up with them. As a matter of fact Mike D of Trinity Garden Cartel produced 3 or 4 cuts for my new album.

TB: Were you guys cool with Rap A Lot Records?

KB: I've always been cool with Rap A Lot. I always bump into Tony "Big Chief" Randle and J Prince. When i was young, i dreamed of being on Rap A Lot. I think everybody at that time was looking to be on Rap A Lot. Pimp C even mentioned me and Street Military a lot on his Pimpilation DVD. Cats in the street would wish me well to restart my career.

TB: The Source Magazine mentioned Street Military in their Texas issue.

KB: See that's the thang mayne. When you make real music that's talking about something real it seems to last longer. Even new heads ask us when is Street Military coming back out. We may have been down for a minute but never out the game..

Street Military store...

Trae ALBUM Review: Tha Truth

I bought Trae's Restless album when he was on Rap A Lot. The first song on that album had me hooked. It took me a minute to realize that Trae is my new favorite MC (along with his Z-RO)
Trae to me is what Project Pat was to Static Major. This OG brings that heat for the streets with a smooth flow the ladies dig, and the community can relate to.

"Trickin Every Car I Get" is a hot single. Sonny Digital made the beat (my hat goes off to you). It sounded like a leftover beat from Jay Z's MCHG. Boosie tells the world "WE SOME STRAIGHT GETO BOYS" . This and H-Town classic. On "I Don't Give A Fuck" , Trae brings that sing-song genius like his cuz Z-RO . I told RO that their hooks is infectious, smooth and Grammy worthy if they wrote for people outside of Hip Hop and Rap. "Doin Me" talks about not listening to these lames about what they gonna do, but neva do, or do some shady shit. Trae, Nipsey and Lil Bibby bring that Twenty 90's flow to this beat. Grand Hustle Hustle Gang  got the ladies hooked on this "Late Night King" track featuring Jeremih , TI, and Ty Dolla Sign. Every queen from their stable is being celebrated in pimptastic fashion. Lastly, "Children Of Men" a track that the community can relate to (especially on Trae Day) . It talks about the struggles of everyday life. Of course with every struggle is a solution and instinctual way to make a situation evolve into something better. Trae loves and cares about his community, and he shows it on this joint.
Overall this album is great. It has a few fillers, but what album doesn't. Trae showcases his versatility and creative genius all the time. Every album is different in lyrics, composition and style. A plan most artists don't use. This is why Trae has longevity and legendary status. MC's take note.

Inet 6 WSTR Radio 17th Year Anniversary

1. Tell me a little about who Neezy and Kee are?

Neezy & Kee is a female pop act, born in New Hampshire but raise in Salem, Mass.
We're half sisters, who grew up in the same house raised by our mother. Neezy is the older sister, she is half Italian/half Puerto Rican. Kee is the younger sister, half Italian/half Cape Verdean . Neezy is the hardcore funky rapper MC. Kee is the sweet innocent edgy song singing vocalist

2. Who are your musical influences?

Our musical influences range anywhere from Aaliyah, TLC, Michael Jackson, & Salt N Pepa

3. What was the process like recording your first EP (studio, writing, recording ect..)

Its not easy ill tell you that. It takes a lot of work and focus. It all starts with the beat we all have a writing session and talk about the topic of the song and the things that we are trying to say. From there we come up with a catchy hook and Kee would lay down the main vocals. For the verses Neezy would come back to the studio and show what she has for the song and Nazz Travagant would guide her to make sure the flow was delivered perfectly. After the hook and verses are recorded we all would give ideas on what ad-libs needed to be added to give the song more feeling and fullness.

4. Who are the producers on the EP?

The main producer on our Its Takes Two EP Is Nazz Travagant  with additional production by D-Nero & Mr.Frost

5. I see you were selling music on the street, Do you find that more beneficial than having a company distribute it? And tell me some stories about the people you sold to?

We find selling our music helps create a fan base. Not everyone gets to meet the artists that they listen to. Our method gives people an opportunity to get to know us on another level that company distributing doesn't provide.

Our favorite is when little kids buy our cd! We had a time when we were selling our music and a little girl came up to us and asked us if we were singers, we told her yes and she got all excited she came back with 3 of her friends and they all bought our EP with their own money. We took pictures with them and singed their cd's. It was a great feeling how happy and excited they all were.

6. Any shows coming up?

Yes! We are on a school tour called the Pace Tour. Pace stands for Promoting Academics Through Creative Expression, Keeping kids in school and also anti -bullying.

7. Do you plan to tour or open up for anybody?

We would love to open up for someone but no plans as of now.

8. Any podcast or radio appearances?

we are planing on it very shortly.

9. What are the future goals for Neezy & Kee?

We are woking on a Neezy&Kee clothing line. A collection of t-shirts and tank tops.  We would love for that to go global. As for our music career  we would love to win awards and keep our act going for years to come!

10. Lastly, what advice would you give to other artist about trying to come up in the game?

Believe in yourself, confidence is everything! Never let anyone tell you that your dream is too big, you can achieve anything if you work hard!  Were living proof! Keep going and never give up no matter how long it takes. It will pay off.

Killah Priest: 5 Fingaz of Death: Solomon's Hill

Walter Reed ( aka Killah Priest) is from Brooklyn , NY the home of the East Coast's fines MC's like Biggie, Busta, Jay-Z, Foxy brown and of course Priest himself. While creating a buzz in his neighborhood and in the 5 boroughs he hooked up with the RZA.
At the time he met RZA, Mr Bobby Digital had a group called the Gravediggaz . He gave priest the opportunity to shine and let him spit verses on the new Gravediggaz album in 1994. After '94 RZA formed the almighty powerful Wu Tang Clan in Staten Island and Killah priest rolled with them. Priest was influenced by fellow Brooklynite GZA (RZA , ODB, and Flavor Flav's cousin). So he felt right at home in this newly formed crew. Priest would go on to record verses on ODB's album Return To The 36 Chambers and on his hometown MC GZA's Liquid Swords. This gave him the opportunity to shine on these masterpieces and give him exposure to the rest of the world for his coming . Well the rest is history for this born GOD.

Killah Priest Throwback Interview ( from my on air show on WUML)

TB: Who influenced you to start rapping?
KP:  All the great MC's from around my way like GZA, Slick Rick, Rakim Big Daddy Kane, KRS One..

TB: What was the struggle like coming up in the rap game?
KP:  The only struggling i seen was battling. I was fortunate enough to be part of the Wu Tang. So success didn't come to me like people who shop for a deal. I got to go on tour with the Gravediggaz, and the Wu . Jumping in the game was different (coughin on that indo )

TB: Who introduced you to the Wu Tang Clan?
KP: Umm!! it was the GZA. Him and the RZA use to come around my way , and they would always battle other MC's on the block. I would hang back and watch , learn skills and gain knowledge. Then i would go out and get in my own zone.

TB: Have you ever collaborated with Jodeci (MCA label mates)?
KP: Naw, i met them a couple of times. It was definitely all love

*side note* "Ghostface pretty much did a freestyle on the Freek N U Remix"- Mr Dalvin

TB: What was it like recording your first album?
KP: It was really so much fun. When recording i was like "Wow, this pulled a lot of real shit out of me"

TB: Now that you're on your  own and off a major label. Do you have more creative control?
KP: Maan its crazy. It's taking me back to the Heavy Mental days, but on another level.

TB: I heard you have  Nas on your album
KP: Yeah, Nas is on there. Nas came through and blessed the album. When he heard the joint , he was like "I need to get on this"

TB: What was the fall out with MCA records?
KP: MCA wasn't on the Priest level. They wanted what was popping at the time. People around me tried to help me get more of a commercial vibe. Tracks i wanted on the album got taken off. It was a mess, so i had to slide off that label . Just Blaze was on that album, i really liked that the most.
(interview ends abruptly as Hell Razah bumps into Priest and then we talk about some real shit . I'll post it when i find the reel)

Raekwon (F.I.L.A. review)

There is a reason the call Rae the Chef. He's always cooking something hot. Rae's newest album F.I.L.A. is an evolutionary step in his career. Every album he drops , he comes out with something totally new and hella funky.

"Wall To Wall" feat. Busta and French Montana  is a fly bragadocious killer track about keeping your bread up so high it hits the ceiling ..like Toyota "Oh What A Feeling"

"Heated Nights"- If your looking for the new "Juicy" of this era, this it right here. Releases exclusively on Revolt TV live. Rae spits venomous fire that's out of this dimension

"1,2 1,2" feat. Snoop Dogg: I can't lie, this is my favie on this album. It features the King Of The West Coast , Snoop Dogg. The beat bangs, the flow is fast. Straight fiiiyaaah, they double dutched this one.

"Soundboy Kill It" : Definitely a hard thumpin Twenty 90's cut. Hip Hop Soul at its finest. The first few bars of the track you think "Hmm, I don't know if this beat fits with his flow". Then he starts spittin a few more bars in and he makes the beat match his flow. Biggie did that too..the beat wouldn't be the greatest , but when he started flippin on the beat, it made it sound soooo hot. That says a lot.

A newcomer Liz Rodrigues makes "Worst Enemy" a new flava in ya ear. Like i said before, Rae evolves and grows each album making F.I.L.A.  a great recipe in the Chef's cookbook.

M-Dot : E.M.S. = MC²

Meet the hardest working artist out of Boston . Back in 2009 i  had this cat on air at WUML. Now in 2015 this MC is doing big things.

1. What Does M-Dot (your MC name) mean?

It started as my initials and also is shortening of my full name. Separately it's also an acronym for "money doesn't own thought."  With my decisions in life I try to never let money be my sole purpose (which is the opposite of the American way I guess). Gotta live first and foremost above doing things you don't want to just for an extra buck. Chasing this music thing is perfect example.

2. What city do you represent?
Boston overall. Grew up in Revere (right under the Tobin bridge in Boston) and now currently live in Lynn (the place Slaine references to go get strippers and drugs in "Gone baby Gone", also seen in the "Departed" where they find one of the bodies). Only pointing out as those are feature films many have seen and you can see and hear Lynn in them. I love it here nevertheless (it's known for being rough but I got no complaints) and live on a good street as well as love the community, playing ball over the summer in the parks when I am not touring.

3. Do you think New England artists get passed on by labels because of their demographic?
Sure. But no excuses we can rise above it. Unfortunately thus far however we have never had a platinum artist amazingly. Or even close for that matter (in hip hop). Wild considering that it's a major city with pretty much the most sports titles (especially over last 15 yrs).

4. As a hip hop head. Do you like live instrumentation or diggin in the crates when looking for a beat to spit on?
Both are awesome. I love music first. Dope is dope. I def wanna experiment much more with live instrumentation. Also love rocking with bands.

5. Do you prefer digital or analog when recording?
I use digital but my programs are so old it might as well be analog. Lol meaning all the extra work I do with editing haha.

6. I know your an MC , but would you branch off and do other music or fuse your sound (Examples: Bubba Sparxxx, Pitbull, 3OH3) so you don't limit yourself to just hip hop?
Yea absolutely. Always would love to grow as an artist. Learn new instruments. Expand. Aside from music I think I'd be a good sports agent or lawyer lmao Atleast that's what I've been told. I'm full Italian and an MC so I pride myself on a gift to gab. Best recruiters in sports... Pitino & Calipari. Hahah What blows my mind is "rappers" nowadays are rarely MC's, they came up in a computer era and many seem to not even have spit game. When I came up all the artists I aspired to be....that was rule number one. Which they embodied.

7.  You have a well known fan base in Italy. Would consider spitting in half English and half Italian mixed with some Spanish too?
You know what's funny lot of people think I'm Spanish. Many times people come up to me talking Spanish Hahaa. I don't speak Italian well enough but love to learn more (understand my mother however). When I am in Italy visiting family or touring I pick up a lot of the language again. Soon as I come home tho I lose it over a few weeks.

8. In this digital age anyone can make an album. Do you think if music was a stock it would plummet?
Yea I think it's def a down stock (from a sales point). I'm still gonna make albums tho. Even working on a vinyl now (as that sells better than CDs currently). But real money is releasing a LP, touring, then selling merch.

9. Personally, i chose to play your music on my show because you were a nice MC and had hot underground features like Rapper Big Pooh, Big Shug, Krumb Snatcha ect.. Do you think new artists should be seasoned a little more before putting out music online? And do you think they should listen to criticism when they're told to go back to the lab or hang up the mic ?

For each there own. Meaning if somebody sucks I don't care and they don't have to retire just let's not fake the funk and pretend there good just cuz it's a new fad to like and they have paid for some support by blogs and radios. Far as coming up I think of that all the time. I think cosigns and years of gaining respect were so vital (it's way I tried to do it when I started) but nowadays its sadly grown away from that. These kids should have to earn it. Still though I ain't one to complain. I'll just keep working, stay consistent and try and be here when they fade away. As I have for years....

10.  You have a new single called "Shine" featuring Wu Tang's Method Man . How did you two meet and put together the track?
My man DC Soulplusmind from LA, whom I've known for a very long time, sent me the song with meth on it, asked if I wanted to jump on....My answer was pretty quick. Lol I added Katy gunn on the hook and it was a wrap. He sent to meth for approval, which we waited on for several months (I was mad nervous) then he hit us back saying he 'dug it' and it was a go. I then asked if I could use for my project, and they all said no problem. Boom shukalucka!

M-Dot Feat. Method Man / Dominique Larue/ Katy Gunn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QJH7De6tTs

11. Any albums for the future?
"Ego and the Enemy" soon. "Shine" & "Smooth" are on it. (Both singles out now). Just signed to "Own Lane Music" (out of Worcester).

12 ***BONUS FUN QUESTION**** Besides being an artist, what other talents do you have?
Got a college scholarship for basketball. Which is cool considering I'm 5'9. Also could dunk (not anymore lmao).

13****BONUS FUN QUESTION*** Do you get your freak on with Jodeci playing in the background?
I hundred percent owe those guys some daps Cuz they def helped me serenade several ladies. Haha

#Twenty90s: 2015 Pt.1

The term Twenty90s was created by Jo'zzy . We are bringing that new flava that is a root from the 90's playbook. The 90's never really got to finish strong. The passing of 2 Pac & Notorious B.I.G. stunted the 90's growth in its last 4 years. It probably could have lasted further into the new millennium (around 2003-05). Inet 6 & Trevor Banks ( also The Timbaland Passion,Mr Dalvin23) are picking up where the 90s left off (ie 1996). The next ten years (2015-2025) will be the new era in Twenty90s music. It has already started with the return of Jodeci,Case, Ginuwine, Missy Elliot ect.. We call it R&Street (coined phrase from Playa (Digital,Black & Static/Major). So sit back, relax and enjoy the new era.
